Lot 234: 1965 Ford Thunderbird Special Landau
Sports Racing & Grand Prix cars, Coys (27th May 2007)
During the spring of 1965 Ford introduced a special model of the 1965 Thunderbird which coincided with the 10th anniversary of the model. The model was finished in special Emberglo paint with special parchment interior with Emberglo appointments, and a parchment vinyl roof. Also included were special wheel trims, walnut effect accents and various moldings and badges. Only 4,500 of these units were produced. The motor car on offer today is one of these Special Landaus, with only 37,000 genuine miles on the clock. Said by the vendor to be in excellent condition all round, the car is somewhat unique in itself, in that it has had no restoration whatsoever, apart from new paint in 2001. The seats, carpets, door trims and under bonnet soundproofing pads are all original and belie their years, as does the vinyl roof. All the chrome is original and virtually as new. The present owner tells us the car looks just as though it has left the showroom. The car was purchased in November 2004 by the vendor from the family who originally purchased the car on 1st June 1965. It had been in the same family from new. In 1988 on the death of the original owner, and with only 27,400 miles on the clock, the niece of the owner took over the car. The car was kept in dry storage with very little use. On its arrival in the UK in February 2005, the odometer showed only 27,900 miles. During this time thousands of dollars were spent on its upkeep. All invoices are available. Since it's arrival in the UK the present owner has spent in excess of £8,000 on a program of continuous maintenance, including complete refurbishment of the swing away steering column and gearshift mechanism as well as many other items to bring the car to its present exceptional condition. All invoices are available.Factory fitted options include air conditioning, safety convenience control panel, which includes vacuum door locks, power windows, tinted glass and fender shields. The car is supplied with substantial original paperwork, including original cheque, invoice, handbook and wallet, window sticker, copies of certificate of title and the R.O.T., (build) sheet. Recent MoT is valid until 1st March 2008 and a UK V5 certificate is also supplied. This is a rare opportunity to own an original example of an icon of 60's American motoring history, which is well at home on today's roads and is much admired by young and old alike.
