Lot 123: 1962 BMW 502
The Sports Car Auction, Coys (21st April 2007)
Following the end of the Second World War, BMW production was inevitably slow to get underway and, after toying with the idea of a flat-twin powered coupe, in late 1952 the German marque launched the 501 saloon. Rather bulbous but with flowing lines, it soon was dubbed Barockengel or Baroque Angel, its lines deemed to be reminiscent of this style church found in Austria and southern Germany. It remained on sale until 1958 but by 1954 it had already become clear that there was also demand for a four door saloon with a more powerful and modern engine than the 501's two litre, straight six that had been designed before the war. Thus, in 1954, the 502 was introduced, essentially the same model as the 501, with similar coachwork and again featuring independent front and live rear torsion bar suspension, but powered by a 2.6 litre V8 engine designed by Dr Fritz Fiedler. It proved to be very popular and in 1955 the option of a 3.2 litre engine became available, using the same V8 as the exotic 507 sports car, itself based on the 501/502, which had made its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show the same year. Either engine provided spirited performance while braking was enhanced in 1958 with the standard fitment of front disc brakes. Production ceased two years later. Finished in blue with complimentary grey interior, this example of the stately 502 was the subject of a comprehensive five year restoration completed in 1999. Recently fitted with new clutch and brakes, it is described as being a very smooth runner and in good condition. It comes with a Dekra certificate, German TuV and German historic registration papers.
