Lot 208: 1964 Ford Mustang MkI V8 Race Notchback-Coup
Motor cars, Bonhams (31st August 2007)
An original Owners Manual from the Ford Motor Company of Dearborn, Michigan, confirms that this 1964 Ford Mustang, a Mk1 2-door Notchback Coupe ordered 16 8 1964 and sold 28 10 1964, was first supplied to Larsen Ford of White Plains, New York, for their despatch to the Swedish Dealers in Orebro. The factory ID-plate with the same Vehicle Warranty Number as that Owners Manual is in place on the drivers side inner wing, the plate recording 5F07A293315, Body 65A and Date Code 19J.
During preparation for Touring Car Racing during 2005 and 2006, the body shell was fully restored, with panels renewed as necessary and fully refinished inside and out in original white, though with fashionable red Shelby stripes. New seals, door handles, bumpers and emblems were used. A regulation steel firewall was incorporated between cockpit and trunk and a lightweight Lexan rear window used. An export-brace between adjustable Shelby-spec Koni shock absorber towers was fitted, a full roll-cage installed and the whole car rewired. The steering wheel is a 15ins diameter Mota Lita, the bucket seat a Cobra Monaco and the full harness a Sabelt 4-point, the latter both FIA approved.
The 289cu ins capacity (4791cc) V8 was rebuilt, race-prepared and resides in spotless engine bay. Although the original block, cylinder heads and inlet manifolds have been retained, most of the engine parts used during the build were brad new. Among high performance items employed - JE forged high-compression pistons for the .030 oversize bores, Eagle ESP con-rods to H-profile, Crane camshaft, Cloyes True-Roller timing chain, Crane push-rods, 1.9ins diameter inlet valves and 1.6ins exhaust valves, Milodon high-volume oil pump and deep-sump with windage tray, HiPo distributor and exhaust manifolds, Holly 700cfm carburettor and HiPo air cleaner. The crankshaft was balanced together with steel flywheel, racing clutch and harmonic balancer. The Ford 4-speed manual gearbox has close-ratios with shifter by Hurst. The differential is a limited slip and the 7ins wide 15ins diameter Minilites are shod with Dunlop 5.50Ms.
Following an inspection earlier this year, the car has been issued with a 14 April 2007 dated FIA Historic Technical Passport, signed by Joachim Hulteren, Technical Manager at Svenska Bilsportforbundet, and carries the latest, stipulated and identical FIA bar-coded hologram on both the scuttle and new FIA papers themselves. This HTP confirms the cars compliance and likely suitability for Period F 1962-1963 Historic Touring Car competition participation. A current document on file confirms Swedish Road Registration from 21 11 1964 for the car on the Swedish registration GWS 390. An ATL Certificate states that the 30 litres capacity fuel cell, manufactured in May 2006, complies with the FIAs FT3-1999 regulations. Having been in receipt of a freshly executed spanner-check by Rae Davis Racing, this clearly largely renewed and well prepped Mustang - immaculate, potent and entirely practical to enjoy with few trips to the workshop - would be an exciting ticket for the next owner to enter Historic Touring Car Racing at whatever level.
