Lot 207: 1971 Ford Mustang Convertible

AutoSport 2008, Coys (12th January 2008)

1971 Ford Mustang Convertible
A huge change occurred in the 1971 Ford Mustang. Regardless, it was the last redesign the first generation of Mustangs would ever receive before the second generation was started. The new 1971 Mustang was introduced to the public in August of 1970 and Ford had huge expectations that it would be enough to spark interest in the muscle car yet again. It was two inches longer, just about two and a half inches wider, and six hundred pounds heavier. Ford was hoping the redesign would work to spark sales and indeed the Mustang outsold its competitors, but the desire for a pony car was not what it once was. As a result, only 149,678 Mustangs were produced in 1971. The three standard body styles, the Sports Roof, hardtop, and convertible, were all used in 1971. The SportsRoof did receive a change in that the rear window angle was changed so it would look more aerodynamic. The result worked; however, seeing out of the almost horizontal window was difficult at best. Reappearing on the '71 model was the typical Mustang corral, while the longer than ever, but classic 1969 Shelby-style, hood angled upwards to cover the hidden windshield wipers, the front bumpers sported a wide chrome band, the rear boasted triple lens taillights which were large and dominant and the door handles were flush mounted instead of the surface mounted style previously used. Presented today in a stunning red colour, this great example of Detroit's iconic Mustang drives well and looks good from every angle. With nearly a full year's MoT test certificate as well as a V5 registration document and numerous bills for routine maintenance and general upkeep, this much underrated later incarnation of Ford's famous pony car has much to offer the new owner.
