Lot 306: The Discovery Channels 'Chop Shop' Super Surfer
Coys at Lord's, Coys (3rd March 2008)
Building on the success of the on-screen relationship and extraordinary feats of transformation seen in Bangla Bangers, Chop Shop sees Bernie and Leepu opening their own garage in London's vibrant East End. The bustling location of the garage will reflect the colourful backgrounds of our two main characters, and provide a wealth of storylines on our doorstep. Only a stone's throw from Brick Lane, surrounded by a mixture of old East End values and newly fashionable bars, the Chop Shop will be smack in the middle of Britain's largest Bangladeshi community. In this thriving multicultural melting pot we see Leepu's 'developing world' ingenuity and can-do attitude rub up against Bernie's old school adherence to western rules and regulations. In an area famed for its cultural diversity, the Chop Shop will have a Jewish Londoner and a Bangladeshi Muslim putting their very different values and traditions together in the pursuit of a common creative endeavour. The Surf' car started life as a 1990s Volkswagen Polo. Its original white colour gave Leepu the idea of turning its boxy design into a far more curvy shape, more in keeping with a swan in fact. However, a bit of window shopping at a local surf shop changed his plans. Now the Polo was going to be turned into a beach pickup with an extra set of wheels in case of 'BTIs' or Beach Traction Issues. This meant an extra Polo had to be sourced and its rear third welded on to the first car. Top hat sections beneath the new bodywork provided the required additional rigidity. The lines are accentuated by spacers on each of the six axles and the paint finish in pearlescent white. Power comes from the standard 1,300cc Volkswagen engine but with an up-rated electronic management chip to boost power. The rear bed is treated with a rugged polyurethane coating from Armadillo Industries and topped out with a custom roll bar. With all bases covered, this extraordinary beach accessory is offered at no reserve and is a must now that the Cornish surfing hotspots are warming up...
