Lot 025: 1991 MERCEDES-BENZ 300 CE
Motor Cars, H&H Classic Auctions Ltd (18th April 2007)
Introduced in 1986, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W124) is still renowned for its engineering integrity and superb build quality. A monocoque chassis design equipped with beautifully balanced coil-sprung suspension (wishbone front / multi-link rear), nicely weighted power-assisted steering and responsive four-wheel disc brakes, it was propelled by a generous selection of petrol and diesel engines. Available in saloon, estate, coupe and convertible guises, the vast majority were specified with automatic transmission. An early flagship for the range, the 300CE exhibited notably sure-footed handling thanks to its forward-biased 53:47 weight distribution. Credited with 177bhp and 188lbft of torque, its 2962cc SOHC straight-six powerplant reputedly enabled the pillarless four-seater to accelerate from 0-60mph in 8.5 seconds and onto 137mph. Belying its performance potential, the two-door coupe was blessed with elegant yet understated styling and a cosseting interior. Finished in silver with beige leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as "a very original car". Reportedly retaining its factory-fitted 'flat face' alloy wheels, 'J729 PBT' is also understood to benefit from a Clifford alarm, Kenwood 'face off' stereo, cruise control, heated seats, sunroof and air conditioning. Said to drive "superbly" and to boast "fifteen stamps in its service book", the coupe has apparently had "just three registered owners". Believed but not warranted to have covered 120,560 miles from new, this "very well specified" 300CE is offered for sale with the aforementioned service book and MOT certificate valid until November 2007.
