Lot 11: Triumph TR3A
Collectors Cars, H&H Classic Auctions Ltd (12th October 2008)
Final evolution of the Triumph TR2/TR3 sportscar line (save for the American market TR3B), the TR3A was introduced in September 1957. Great fun to drive, its tough box-section chassis featured independent coil-and-wishbone front suspension, a leaf-sprung 'live' rear axle and disc / drum brakes. Fitted with a 1991cc four-cylinder OHV unit developing some 104bhp and 117lbft of torque, it was reputedly capable of 104mph. A great sales success on both sides of the Atlantic, the model provided a rather more visceral alternative to its MG and Jaguar competition.
Finished in Primrose Yellow with black upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "good overall" condition. While, he adds that: "The TR3A was built in 1960 and exported to the USA. Returned to the UK around 1987; restored by Marksdane and converted to right-hand drive. Purchased by present owner in 1994, the Triumph has been used sparingly each summer covering around 4,000 reliable miles in the last fourteen years. This included three years in Texas when we temporarily moved there. The car has been serviced each year, kept garaged in the summer and in air-conditioned storage over the winter. 1,800 was spent in 2007 renewing the fuel system, hoses, ignition etc and waxoyling the underside. There is an extensive service and MOT record of the last fourteen years available. Driving the Triumph around the lanes of Wiltshire has been a pleasure. Unfortunately other recent commitments have recently limited my use of the car and I hope it will find a new owner who will continue to use and cherish it. The Primrose Yellow colour brings a smile to my face even in a wet summer as 2008".
