Lot 366: Jaguar XJ6 3.6-Litre LPG-Converted Saloon

A Sale of Collectors' Motor Cars, Bonhams (25 July 2009)

Code-named 'XJ40', the new XJ6 was greeted with considerable acclaim on its arrival in 1986, being faster and more economical than before while possessing superior handling characteristics. Car magazine's Gavin Green was just one of the many motoring journalists who found much to praise: 'Where the new XJ6 really scores over its predecessor is in its behaviour at medium to high speed, and in its ability to go round bends quickly. The new Jaguar does not just control the bumps of a broken urban surface, it also manages, beautifully, to control its body movements as it sprints over undulating country roads. The car's composure in such conditions is truly amazing for its bulk&' This particular XJ6 was sold new to Mr J Howard of Thornhill, West Yorkshire via Thornes of Wakefield and comes with the original bill of sale, which reveals that it was delivered with the optional metallic paint, automatic transmission, air conditioning, electric front seats and leather trim for a VAT-inclusive price of £27,209. The car remained within the original owner's family until July 2002 when it was purchased by the current vendor having covered a mere 23,829 miles. Jaguar specialists K Mugglestone & Co carried out the LPG conversion in March 2004 and the relevant certificate is on file. The gas filler is fitted to the tow bar for easy access, and the change over from petrol start to LPG is automatic when the latter is switched on. With LPG currently costing around half as much per litre as ordinary unleaded petrol, this car affords the enticing prospect of cheap luxury motoring. The car has been used in the summer months only since 2002, being on SORN during the winter, and has covered a total of 53,456 miles to date. A new set of tyres was fitted around 1,500 miles ago and the vendor describes the car as in generally excellent condition. Finished in Talisman Silver with Isis Blue leather interior, the appropriately registered 'YXJ 6' is offered with the aforementioned documentation, current road fund licence, MoT to November 2009 and Swansea V5 registration document.
