Lot 81: Jaguar E-Type S2 4.2 FHC

Classic Cars and Bikes, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (21st March 2007)

In 1968 Jaguar introduced some significant changes to the E-type, including the 265bhp 4.2 Coupe. These updated cars became known as the Series 1.5 in later life, though towards the end of 1968 they were officially named the Series II.Early 1968 4.2 Coupes received exposed headlamps with chrome embellishers, a collapsible steering column and safety dashboard rocker switches instead of  the earlier toggle types. The later Series II added new bumpers and larger tail lights to the other safety features plus a much larger front air intake and two electric cooling fans instead of one. All Series II cars had all-synchro gearboxes, better brake servos and improved seats.First registered in June 1969, this particular Series II car was supplied new by Bristol Street Motors and was reputedly first owned by a director of the firm, Reg Morgan. He only kept the car for three months before it was sold to Douglas Levack of Llanwrtyd Wells who kept it for the next 12 years. In 1981 it was acquired by the current vendor who has cherished it ever since. In the late 1980s the car was treated to a substantial body restoration which included the fitment of new sills, new rear quarter panels, new door skins, a new bonnet and a repaint in the original Sable. A full stainless steel exhaust system was also fitted at  about the same time. Since then the car has only covered about 200 miles a year, mainly driving to classic car shows, and the vendor believes that the 58,000 miles on the clock is the genuine mileage covered from new though there is insufficient documentary evidence to warrant this. A nice touch is that the car still retains its complete original tool kit.Always garaged, always well  maintained and said to drive beautifully, this is a rare opportunity to acquire what is effectively a two-owner car with a very low mileage.
