Lot 212: Jaguar S-Type 3.4 Saloon
Jaguar Heritage and Classic Cars, Barons (1st May 2007)
The S-Type was a development of the MKII using the, all new, independent rear suspension from the MKX and E-Type. The MKII was heavily revised to accept the independent suspension, with a narrower track than the MKX but wider track than the E-Type. The rear end was restyled more along MKX lines and the rear section of the roofline was raised, making the rear screen more upright. The familiar front end was revised with "eyebrows" over the headlights, faired in indicators and slim-line bumper blades. The inside of the S-Type was also more MKX than MKII, offering more luxury and a more efficient heating system. Offered here is a 1966 S-Type 3.4 saloon, which has the three-speed Borg Warner automatic transmission. The car is well know in Jaguar Club circles as the car which, Nigel Thorley, editor of the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club magazine acquired from the original owners son. The original owner had kept the car for 34 years. Since that time the car was sold to another gentleman who, unfortunately, fitted an incorrect spark plug, causing damage to the head. This was discovered by the vendor, when he acquired the car in 2002 and he set about having the car put right. The car has completed less than 2,000 miles since the engine and gearbox were overhauled. This involved a local Jaguar specialist stripping and rebuilding the engine, gearbox rebuild by specialists, carburettor and choke overhaul, new radiator, new ignition components, new wheel bearings, Dynamo armature and new brakes. Finished in golden sand, the car sits on chrome wire wheels and is offered complete with a Heritage certificate from the JDHT. This S-Type was chosen to feature in an article in Classic Car Magazine in 2006, when the car was put through its paces by staff writer Rob Scorah. He commented that the car handled well while giving a good quality ride. Offered for sale due to impending retirement and a perceived inability to maintain the car to a level the owner would ideally like.
