Lot 35: Ford MODEL T TOURER
'The Brooklands Tradition' Vintage & Thoroughbred, BCA (5th June 2008)
When introduced in 1908, the Model T was an entirely new design, differing considerably from previous Ford offerings. A 4-cylinder engine was employed with cylinders cast en-bloc, and an unusual feature for the time was the detachable cylinder head. Vanadium steel was used extensively, which gave the Model T great strength, and the chassis employed transverse springing front and rear. By 1911, an assembly plant had been established in Britain, and the Model T was to become available in numerous guises, selling in huge numbers. Enjoying a long and illustrious career, the Model T remained in production until 1927, by which time well over 15,000,000 'Tin Lizzies' had been built. One of the most significant vehicles in the history of the automobile, the Model T set new standards for reliability and durability. In the year 2000, the Global Automotive Elections Foundation voted the Model T Ford as the car of the twentieth century as it was instrumental in changing the way of life for so many. Driving a Model T Ford is simple and straightforward assuming you have never actually driven a 'conventional' motor car! Forward gears are selected using the left hand pedal whilst the centre pedal, when depressed, engages reverse gear, and braking is accomplished by way of the right hand pedal. The accelerator is mounted on the left hand side of the steering column whilst the ignition lever is on the right. When under way, a Model T cruises happily at 35-40mph and offers a delightful motoring experience quite unlike any other. Catered for by several specialists and an enthusiastic owners' club, maintaining a Model T presents no problems. A 1922 4/5-seat Tourer, this example was imported from Adelaide and first registered in the UK in May 2001. Finished in cream, it is said to be in good mechanical order all round and has formed part of a private collection. It is now offered for sale as the collection is being reduced. An MOT certificate is provided, current until 2nd December 2008, along with a V5, copy of Customs & Excise Form 386 relating to the import of the vehicle, and a copy of a document showing details of the first service by Duncan Motors Ltd of Adelaide, following its supply on 21st October 1922.
