Lot 110: Alfa Romeo Sprint 2600
Jaguar Heritage Auction, Barons (11th June 2006)
In 1962 Alfa Romeo introduced the Sprint and Spider 2600, which used the same, dohc, 2548cc, straight six engine and a lot of other mechanical bits from the Berlina saloon. The new coupe was designed by a young Giorgetto Giurgiaro when he was working for Bertone and shared the same twin headlamp configuration with the Berlina. It also shared the all wheel disc brakes and five speed gearbox with the saloon but had triple carburettors and 145bhp under the very stylish hood, which could propel the Sprint to 120mph in 1962.Only 597 rhd versions of the Sprint were built and far fewer remain extant. This example has known history back to 1972, when it was acquired by Ken Davis and sold to Ron Lawrence in 1985, when Ken Davis passed away. The current owner and vendor bought the car out of storage with Ron Lawrence in 1989 with the odometer showing 81,605 miles. It now reads 89,000 (at the time of writing).Finished in silver metallic with good, original red leather and red interior with grey carpets, the car is said to be in good condition throughout. The vendor states that the car has benefited from regular greasing and correct maintenance during his 16 year tenure and has been used for a number of long runs to club meetings etc. The car was the recipient of an award from the Alfa Romeo Owners Club and featured in the club magazineThis is predominately a very original car although the vendor does say that the car has benefited from the fitting of Koni shocks, a stainless steel exhaust and a new steering doughnut.
