Lot 312: Lamborghini Espada

In 1968 Lamborghini introduced its first four seater model, the Espada, with typically outrageous styling courtesy of Bertone. Originally fitted with a 325bhp, 4.0 litre V12 engine, it sported fully independent suspension and four wheel disc brakes. During its 10 year production run the car underwent some changes, and three different series were produced. These were the S1 (1968-1970), the S2 (1970-1972) and the S3 (1972-1978). Each model featured increases in power output but only minor details were changed on the exterior design, while the interior was altered dramatically with each model; an all new dashboard and steering wheel was installed for the S2, and the interior was again revamped for the S3. In 1970, power-assisted steering was offered as an option, and in 1974 automatic transmission followed, one of the first units capable of absorbing the torque of a large and powerful V12; it also had unusual gearing, with just three ratios in total: drive, first and reverse. The following year 'impact' bumpers were fitted to meet American safety requirements, and some people consider cars produced with them to be the S4, but Lamborghini did not officially change the designation. Near the end of the Espada's life, Bertone designed a four door prototype, which was never put into production. Chassis 9430 was first registered on 8th March 1976 and acquired by a large private collection in March 1988, since when it has been kept in heated storage and maintained to a very high standard. Finished in silver with a tan leather interior, the car comes complete with an extensive service, repair and ownership history file dating back to the original sales invoice of 1976. An excellent opportunity to acquire a superb example of one of these highly distinctive classic Lamborghinis.
