Lot 218: 1969 Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA 1300
Sports Car Auction, Coys (22nd July 2006)
When Alfa Romeo became a mass producer of cars in the 1950's, it did not forget its glorious past which is why even its 1300cc four-door saloons had a 'Twin Cam' engine and, long before any other popular maker, a five-speed gearbox. But despite building some outstanding production cars, the factory dithered about a competition programme, so private owners stepped into the breach and the Giulietta, in particular, were very successful in races and rallies. The factory responded to a popular movement and soon was producing special versions in generous numbers before setting up Autodelta to run its works teams. In 1965, Alfa Romeo laid down a special batch of the Giulia GT, the GTA ('A' for 'Alleggerita', or 'lightened') which had aluminium body panels, revised suspension geometry and, with a twin-plug head, 170 bhp at 7,500 rpm. In the 1966 Sebring 4 Hour race Jochen Rindt led a GTA 1-3-4-5-8, De Adamich and Zeccoli won the Nrburgring 6 Hours and the Snetterton 600 kms, and a GTA won the Grand Prix of Budapest and the Touring Car class in the Circuit of Mugello. Alfa Romeo won over 200 races that year and the GTA took the lion's share rounding off the season with overall victory in both the European and Transamerican Touring Car Championships. That was a good start but it was only the beginning and countless other wins were to follow. Giunti took the 1967 European Hillclimb Championship for Touring cars with five wins and a second but the crowning glory was a hat trick of overall wins in the European Touring Car Championship, 1966-8.This Alfa is in superb condition and finished in a most striking combination of giallo (yellow) with black interior. Its double ignition 1290cc engine mated to a 5 speed gearbox gives 125 HP and we are informed that the car was built back from a racing car to the now street version but retaining all the original GTA parts aside from its interior trim. The rebuilt engine is not yet run in as the car has in fact zero miles recorded since its rebuild. This example comes with Swiss papers although all EU taxes have been paid. A car for the connoisseur in presented in extremely fine condition.Ein sehr seltenes Exemplar des begehrten 1300 GTA, der in Sammlerkreisen hochgeschtzten Leichtbauversion dieses populren Sportwagens.
