Lot 027: MG A 1600 MkI Coupe

Its not very often that a closed coupe version of a sportscar actually looks as pleasing as its more glamorous open counterpart, however with the MGA Coupe this was definitely the case. The MGA was blessed with good looks and a well proportioned body from day one, the fixed head Coupe continuing this theme with a roof design that mimicked the Roadster's raised soft-top profile. The MGA Coupe became a standard model in the range from 1956 and was available throughout the model's lifetime, in 1500, 1600, Mk II and Twin-Cam forms. Standard features included wind-up door windows, external door handles, locks and extra brightwork. Mechanically the closed cars were identical to their open sister MGA models and had genuine 100mph performance. First registered in Montgomeryshire in 1960, this lovely MGA 1600 MkI Coupe was fully restored in 1995 by Fairbourne Motors as is recorded by a plaque under the bonnet. It then spent some years in the Park Hall Motor Museum in Oswestry, from where it was acquired by the current vendor in 2007. Recently recommissioned for the road and fitted with two new 6v batteries, the car is said to drive very well and appears to have exceptionally sound and straight bodywork and an equally clean underside. An original right-hand drive car, it comes with a Heritage Certificate confirming that it was built on 25th-26th May 1960 and was despatched on 30th May. Optional extras included wire wheels, heater, ash tray and lighter, all of which are present to this day. Currently taxed and with an MOT until May 2009, it is ready to jump in and drive away today.
