Lot 227: 1962 Matchless 250cc G2
Collectors' Motorcycles, Bonhams (19th October 2008)
The all-new design of AMC’s Matchless G.2 was shared with its companion AJS Model 14, both being announced in late 1958 when AMC returned to the 250 class, neglected since WW2. The engine/gear unit had an internal oil-tank and an ingenious gearbox which rotated within the main casing in order to adjust the primary chain, the whole mounted in a composite tube and pressed-steel frame. Teething troubles, with the early examples of what was a good design, damaged public confidence and the model lasted for just five years. NFB 902 is in good all-round condition, though needing a careful check-over after years of storage in a private collection. In original trim, with 12000 miles recorded, it is complete with its RF.60 and a V5.
