Lot 139: Jaguar XJ 4.2C
Classic Collectors & Historic Cars, Barons (19th June 2007)
The XJC was a great favourite of Sir William Lyons. He also had a great deal of input in the design of this beautiful pillar-less coupe, which was officially .launched in 19744. The model was only available for three years and was produced in very limited numbers. The model was available in Jaguar XJ 4.2C, Daimler Sovereign 4.2C, Jaguar XJ 5.3C and Daimler Double Six Coupe. The rarest of all is the Daimler Double Six, which were only available in RHD form and failed to break out of the 400's. No matter what model you choose, none were mass produced with only 6,505 odd Jaguar 4.2C, 1598 Daimler 4.2C and 1873 5.3 C being built. This compares to the 122,500 S3 XJ6 Saloons and 80,000 S2 saloons that were built. The XJ 4.2C offered here is rather special. Owned by Jaguar Cars and used by Browns Lane Plant Director, Peter Craig until his sudden death in 1977, the car was retained by Jaguar Cars, as a mark or respect, until 1983. Displayed in the Jaguar museum and occasionally taken to outside events, the car was finally offered by tender when the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust was formed and the winning tender was one John Coombs. Well known for his Jaguar Dealership in Guildford, for involvement in motor sport and especially for the Coombs MKII. John Coombs sold the car to the well known Jaguar enthusiast John Parker in 1985, who kept the car until 1994, when it was acquired by the vendor.Throughout its time with Jaguar the car had remained completely original but on acquiring the car the vendor placed the car with top Jaguar specialist Marcus Barclay to have it thoroughly checked over. Marcus Barclay went through the car mechanically. During the vendors ownership the car has benefited from all new road springs and shock absorbers, new, larger radiator, Kenlow fans, tyres, brakes discs, battery and regular service parts as required. It has covered a warranted 58,000 miles in 32 yearsFinished in white with the rare and optional russet velour interior, the car has, over the past 18 years, been kept in a de-humidified garage and was treated to Waxoyle treatment by the company " Before and After" in August 2007. The only addition to the original specification is a Cobra A5093 Alarm
