Lot 583: 1989 Maserati Biturbo Spyder
Coachwork by Zagato
Goodwood Festival of Speed, Bonhams (11th July 2008)
Conceived to challenge BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the luxury sporting saloon market, Maserati's Biturbo debuted in 1982. Produced initially with a 2.0-litre, four-cam, three-valves-per-cylinder V6 producing 180bhp, the Biturbo gained 2.5- and 2.8-litre units as the model range expanded throughout the 1980s to include four-door and open-topped variants, the Spyder first appearing at the 1984 Turin Show with the 2.0-litre engine. Not surprisingly, the Spyder proved considerably faster than its saloon progenitor, in three-valve form having a top speed of around 135mph, a figure slightly improved upon with the four-valve unit fitted and considerably bettered by the larger-engined versions that followed.
This right-hand drive Biturbo Spyder has the desirable 2.8-litre V6 engine and four-speed automatic transmission. Supplied by James Young, of Berkeley Street, London W1 on 1st August 1989, the car has enjoyed only three owners, the first from new until 1995 and the second (lady) owner from 1995 to 2008. The car was serviced from new until 1998 by Chingford Street Garage, of London NW1 and from that time onwards has been maintained by marque specialists Bill McGrath Ltd, of Kington, Herts. Accompanying history testifies to regular maintenance throughout its life, the most recent service in February 2008 including a change of cam belts (bill on file). Finished in rosso with cream suede leather interior, the car has covered 25,646 miles from new and is described by the vendor as in generally excellent condition. It is offered with current MoT/road fund licence and Swansea V5 registration document.
Endowed with well proportioned lines and an outstandingly equipped interior featuring sumptuous leather upholstery and plentiful wood veneer, the Biturbo Spyder was one of the finest Grand Tourers of its day and remains one of the most sought after of recent Maseratis. There can be few better than this low mileage, carefully maintained example.
