Lot 406: 1929 Norton 490cc 16H

Collectors' Motor Cars and Motorcycles, Bonhams (9th September 2006)

1929 Norton 490cc 16H
Except for a brief flirtation with proprietary v-twin engines, Norton Motors had stayed faithful to the ‘single’, producing in both side-valve and overhead-valve forms some of the most handsome machines made in the vintage period. Their visual trademark was that of a tall engine under a silver tank, apparently half way between two large wheels. It was a successful formula for them into the 1950s. The 16H was a mainstay of the range. Not so fussy or demanding of maintenance as its sister ohv, the Model 18, the 16H was favoured by legions of riders as a fine, well-handling and reliable motor cycle, with more of that elusive charisma than most. ‘TR 5993’ is an original and complete 16H, from the first year of Norton’s slim ‘saddle’ tank, which has been completely rebuilt by a gifted restorer, initially for his own use, though, as he says, ‘one restoration funds the next’. The engine has had attention to the cylinder bores, main bearings, bottom end and valve gear, while the carburettor was re-built by Martin Bratby. Cycle and transmission parts have been overhauled throughout with enamel and nickel plate restored to (dare one say it?) better than Norton standards. A multiple concours-winning machine, ‘TR 5993’ rides as well as it looks, a first-time starter that has done many distance rides and rallies. Complete with V5C for its Southampton number, current MOT and road tax, and a history file including an RF60 log book, this lovely 16H is ready to leave Hampshire ownership for the first time since 1929.
