Lot 242: 1975 MG BGT Competition
Autosport 2006, Coys (14th January 2006)
After the considerable world-wide success of the MGA, it was obvious that the MG's successor would have a tough act to follow. Major development had gone into the new car which, unlike the MGA with its separate chassis, was to be of monocoque construction to enable production output to exceed the record 100,000-plus run of the MGA. Designed in-house at MG, the new MGB was launched at the 1962 Earls Court Motor Show. Its appeal was instant, offering a huge increase in interior space while having overall dimensions less than those of the MGA. Power came from the tried and tested B Series four cylinder engine, though with strengthened bottom end and capacity increased from 1,622cc to 1,798cc. Via twin SU carburettors it developed a respectable 94bhp at 5,440rpm which, allied to a four-speed gearbox, allowed the handsome new MG to reach 0-60mph in 11.4 seconds and 104mph. Suspension remained as for the MGA, i.e. independent coil spring wishbone at the front with a live, leaf-sprung rear axle. Brakes were again discs front, drums rear. As with all MG's, the 'B' was soon very active in racing and rallying courtesy of BMC's famous Abingdon competition department. The flexibility of the car is testament to the legion of amateur, semi-professional and professional drivers that regularly compete in these spirited cars on both track and the more looser surfaces. Today's example has been carefully restored over a three year period with a specification detailing a safe, reliable and potential rally winner combination. Mission accomplished then. A 10,000 body restoration by Mossop Motor Factors, MG Specialists, has recently been undertaken complete with photographic records including new wings, doors, seam welded sills as well as all other body repairs done as necessary. The engine has been prepared by Southern Carburettors to 1950cc stage 2 fast road/rally spec with 4 speed all synchro gearbox and electric overdrive. To keep the car on the black stuff, uprated rear suspension with telescopic shocks, adjustable ride height and anti-tramp bars are located. (All period mods as MG GTS). Further modifications include a free flow exhaust system, sump and tank guards as well as tow hooks and lighting mounts. The original mission statement has not been forgotten however, with Safety Devices cage and harnesses fitted as well as fire extinguishers. Other competition modifications include twin facet electronic pumps mounted in the boot and the added benefit of a new red leather interior and carpets. Further details, by Rally Guru John Heffer, include full rewiring and fuses brought into the cabin bringing bills in total to about 20,000. She starts on the button, is eligible for all major historic events and would prove to be an excellent investment for novice and the more experienced alike.
