Lot 258: 1937 Rolls-Royce Phantom III Sedanca De Ville

The choice of a V12 engine for the new Phantom III was a logical one for Rolls-Royce, who already possessed considerable experience of manufacturing V12 aero engines, while doubtless another consideration was the need to match the multi-cylinder opposition, notably the V16 Cadillac and V12 Hispano-Suiza. Maximum power was eventually raised to 180bhp, which was sufficient to propel later Phantom IIIs, such as the car offered here, to 100mph, a quite outstanding accomplishment for such a well-constructed and luxuriously-appointed vehicle.
Delivered new in July 1938 via Jack Barclay Ltd of London to its first owner, diamond magnate Sir Ernest Oppenheimer, final-series Phantom III chassis number ‘3DL34’ wears imposing sedanca de ville limousine coachwork by H J Mulliner and is pictured in Lawrence Dalton’s definitive work, Rolls-Royce, The Derby Phantoms (p400). Sir Ernest used the car in South Africa from where it was repatriated and registered ‘AYX 701T’ in England in May 1979. While in the present French ownership the car has benefited from extensive mechanical refurbishment, undertaken by Rolls-Royce/ Bentley specialists Sargeants of Goudhurst in the late 1990s, including relined clutch and front brakes, re-cored radiator and re-wired electrics. Three expired MoTs indicate fewer than 1,000 miles covered between June 1984 and May 1998, and the vehicle is presented in very good original condition. Offered with copy order form and factory build sheets, sundry service/ maintenance invoices, original tool kit (partially complete) and UK registration document, this elegant Rolls-Royce represents the pinnacle of pre-war British automotive craftsmanship.


Livrée neuve en juillet 1938 par Jack Barclay Ltd de Londres à son premier propriétaire, le magnat des diamants Sir Ernest Oppenheimer, ce châssis Phantom III, no.’3DL34’, une des dernières séries, est habillée d’une élégante carrosserie ‘Coupé Chauffeur’ dessinée par H.J.Mulliner. On retrouve sa photographie dans le livre de référence écrit par Lawrence Dalton,‘Rolls-Royce, The Derby Phantoms’ (p.400). Sir Ernest utilise la voiture en Afrique du Sud d’où elle est rapatriée en Angleterre et immatriculée ‘AYX 701T’en mai 1979. Dans les mains de son propriétaire actuel français, la voiture a bénéficié de divers travaux réalisés par les spécialistes Rolls-Royce Sargeants de Goudhurst à la fin des années 90, incluant l’embrayage et les freins avant, la réfection du radiateur et de l’électricité. Trois MoT (contrôle technique) anglais indiquent un peu plus de 1’000 miles parcourus entre juin 1984 et mai 1998. Cet excellent véhicule est présenté dans un très bon et rarissime état d’origine où tout est authentique. Elle sera livrée à son futur propriétaire avec la copie de la commande originale, diverses factures d’entretien, la trousse à outils d’origine (certains manques) et son document d’immatriculation anglais.
