Lot 227: 1934 Lancia Augusta Lusso

Les Grandes Marques a Monaco, Bonhams (16th May 2005)

1934 Lancia Augusta Lusso
Yet another hugely commercially successful car was launched by Lancia at the Paris Salon in 1932 with the unveiling of the all-new, compact Augusta, a car of unitary construction with pillarless four-door coachwork and powered by a highly efficient overhead camshaft, four-cylinder, vee formation engine, displacing 1,196cc. In true Lancia tradition suspension was by fully independent coil front springs with semi-elliptic rears. Remarkably nimble with a top speed of 112km/h, the Augusta found a ready market and favour with such notable motor racing heroes as Nuvolari, Fagioli and Varzi. Perhaps the pinnacle of fame for the Augusta was the sensational 1-2-3-4 formation finish in the gruelling Targa Florio endurance race of 1936. Top specification was the Berlina Lusso with its wire wheels, more lavish upholstery, wind deflectors for the side windows, distinctive two-tone paintwork, V-shaped radiator grille and pressed waistline – a handsome car indeed.

This exceptional example has had just two owners from new and was previously owned by Count Fanti di Castenedolo of Brescia. It has been the outright winner of many concours d’élégance events, judges particularly highlighting its originality. Mechanical condition is reflected in its equally impressive awards list in regularity events and the car, sympathetically restored by Lancia specialists, KCA, is well-known and respected in Lancia circles. Italian registered, it is ASI homologated (no.2230) and recorded in the Lancia Register, no.423.
