Lot 259: 1947 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 SS
Légende et Passion, Coys (20th May 2006)
The 1950 Italian GT Championship Winning - Mille Miglia, Coppa d'Oro delle Dolomiti. - "The Ammendola" (HEADER)This car is one of the earliest Super Sports from post-war production. It is part of the first run of Touring Coupés/Berlinettas which purists consider the most desirable. Like many 1st. series classics (Jaguar E-type, Porsche 356) these early models are lighter, give better power-to-weight-ratio and show the cleanest styling. More over Ammnedola had this pure GT equipped with the much sportier floor shift of the competition 6Cs.This car was delivered May 6th, 1947 by Alfa Romeo as rolling chassis to Carrozzeria Touring of Milan. The finished car appears to have been subsequently used by Carlo Felice Bianchi Anderloni, then proprietor of the famous Touring Coachbuilder as his personal transport for almost a year.During this time the car was exhibited at the Parco Valentino Concorso dEleganza and won the event with the trophy of "Eccellenza".Most probably viewed there the Touring Berlinetta was acquired by the Torinese industrialist and faithful Alfa client Giovanni Tonella. The car was first registered in his name August 28th. 1948 with the licence no. 88591 -TOIn April 1950 it then passed on to another Torinese, Salvatore Ammendola, long time Alfa Romeo gentleman driver, who had raced Alfas before the war. He had the car prepared for the 1950 GT season, campaigning it in all major races like Mille Miglia and Coppa dOro delle Dolomiti. After again finishing first at the "Stella Alpina" on August 27th. 1950 Ammendola was awarded the Italian Gran Turismo championship for that year, beating in the Ferraris and the upcoming Lancias. Being sold to Fratelli Presunti of Florence in 1952 the car acquired licence no. 57296-FI. After having passed through a number of owners the car was finally laid up in Anzola Emilia. From there it was transferred in the 80s to Dino Cognolatos restoration premises in Vigonza. The car remined in storage until purchaed by a noted Alfista who ha the car restored. With all the Touring numbering on the body parts still in place, some paint remaining and interior details still intact the car gave all the correct indications needed for restoration. Thus in all aspects the Berlinetta has been painstakingly brought back to its old splendour. Some of the body trim still shows the original minor blemishes to preserve maximum authenticity. Special attention has been given to precious features created and patented by Carrozzeria Touring, like the "Aerlux" perspex roof and the adjustable lumbal support in the seats. In all the restoration took five years with final bench testing and breaking in of the engine. The car was inspected after completion of the restoration and has been awarded FIVA classifiction A/3 with passport no. 027529. It is presently registered in Germany as historic vehicle for regular road use.
