Lot 060: 1957 MG A ROADSTER

After taking the US market by storm in the immediate post-war period with their charming but antiquated T-Series models, the MG company took a huge leap forward with the launch of the TF's successor in 1955 - the MGA. Having to rise to the challenge of the TR series which rivals Standard Triumph had launched in 1952, the MGA's smooth, aerodynamically styled bodyshell looked as modern as the TF's had old-fashioned. Still mounted on a separate chassis, coil-sprung independent front suspension and rack & pinion steering gave the new car handling and roadholding characteristics that were at least as much fun as those enjoyed by the occasionally wayward TR2. Powered by a 72 bhp twin carburettor version of the new BMC B-Series engine in a light body the MGA was not far behind its arch rival in performance terms either and the gap was subsequently narrowed further with the launch of uprated Twin Cam and 1600cc models in 1958 and 1959 respectively. Popular both at home and abroad, the MGA lasted until1962 when it was replaced by the MGB, still looking as modern as the day it was launched. The example that we are offering for sale here today was built in 1957 and having been owned by the current owner for the last 20 years was treated to a body off restoration in 1988. Converted to competition specification with a new balanced, lightened and ported competiton 1800cc B-series engine and works close ratio gearbox fitted by Bob West/Aldon Automotive in 2002, it features a Piper BP 300 cam, period Weber carburettors, high efficiency radiator, period Hepolite Power-Max pistons and competition distributor. Campaigned by the present owner in events such as the Welsh Monte, Winter Challenge, Monte Carlo Challenge and Coupe Des Alpes (where it finished 5th in class in 2002) it is said to be very fast and reliable. Competition harnesses are fitted and hardtop, roll over bar and original windscreen will be included in the sale of the car. Described by the vendor as having 'excellent' engine, gearbox, red paintwork and 60 spoke painted wire wheels/tyres; 'very good' interior with red piped black leather upholstery and 'original' electrical equipment the chassis and bodywork are both said to 'need some tidying'.
