Lot 207: Alfa Romeo 2600 Spyder Series 2
Launched in 1962, the Alfa Romeo 2600 Spyder with its handsome Touring coachwork represented a return for the Italian marque to the high class, luxury six cylinder cars which in the past had proved so successful. Its chief rivals were the Maserati 3500 GT Spyder and Lancia Flaminia Convertible, both similar in appearance and performance. The Alfa's twin overhead camshaft engine developed a respectable 145bhp at an unstressed 5,900rpm, fed by three twin-choke side-draught carburettors, while power was transmitted through a five speed gearbox which gave the car an impressive 125mph top speed. The sophisticated mechanical specification was matched by a luxurious and well-appointed interior, making the car an ideal choice for long distance high speed open touring. This superb Alfa Romeo 2600 Spyder was originally delivered by Auto Neuser of Nuremberg to German film actor Herbert Fleischmann, who kept it for the first two years in Germany prior to moving to his Swiss home near Locarno. Fleischmann kept the car until his death in 1984, after which it was stored at his swiss home until the mid 90s, when a restoration was started, but never finished. It took another 10 years until this restoration was continued to the highest standard by the now owner, finished in 2007. The car received a ground up treatment to concourse standard. Every component was either carefully restored or when possible replaced with the original Alfa Romeo part. A list of the work done, taking over 2000 hours, is available in the auction file. The car is now probably in a better condition than when new and comes with german and swiss road docs., both 2 keys, Service booklet, owners manual, parts catalogue, the original sales brochure and original tool box. Sitting on chrome wire wheels and being equipped with the original Becker Mexico wireless and the Nardi steering wheel, this car is probably the best on offer worldwide at the moment and most likely unrepeatable.
