Lot 240: Jaguar E-Type Series II 4.2 Roadster

Classic Car Auction, Historics at Brooklands (18 May 2011)

The Jaguar E-Type was initially designed and shown to the public as a grand tourer in two-seater coup form (fhc or fixed head coup) and as convertible (roadster) The 2+2 version with a lengthened wheelbase was released several years later. On its release Enzo Ferrari called the Jaguar E-Type "The most beautiful car ever made". The model was made in three distinct versions which are now generally referred to as 'Series 1', 'Series 2' and 'Series 3'. The Museum of Modern Art recognized the significance of the Jaguar E-Type's design in 1996 by adding a blue roadster to its permanent design collection, one of only two automobiles to receive the distinction. Open headlights without glass covers, a wrap-around rear bumper, re-positioned and larger front indicators and tail lights below the bumpers, better cooling aided by an enlarged 'mouth' and twin electric fans, together with uprated brakes are all hallmarks of Series two cars. The engine is easily identified visually by the change from smooth polished cam covers to a more industrial 'ribbed' appearance. The interior and dashboard were also re-designed, with rocker switches being substituted for toggle switches. The dashboard switches also lost their symmetrical layout. New seats were fitted, which purists claim lacked the style of the originals but were certainly more comfortable. Air conditioning and power steering were available as factory options.

This particularly attractive Jaguar E-Type 4.2 was originally supplied to the export market and was repatriated back to the UK in 1992. Finished in Old English White with red leather trim the current vendor has been the proud owner of this fine example since May 2006. Since then, the vehicle has undergone a full engine rebuild and has covered approx 5,000 miles. During the vendors time of ownership, the vehicle has been kept in a dry garage and has had only minimum use, for maximum enjoyment. Supplied with a V5 document and a fresh MoT test certificate valid until May 2012.
