Lot 327: Aston Martin DB5 4.2-Litre Saloon
Sale of Aston Martin and Lagonda Motor Cars, Bonhams (9th May 2009)
The DB5 was the first and remains the most famous of all the 'James Bond' Aston Martins, having appeared in no fewer than five movies of the series, beginning with Goldfinger in 1964. Equipped with rocket launchers and sundry other gadgets, 007's DB5 was finished in Silver Birch with red interior, in which specification it was later issued by Corgi Toys.
Delivered new to Whyatts Garage (Sales) Ltd of Slough, this '007-specification' DB5 was purchased by the current (believed fourth) owner in 2006. The Aston was in very good condition at that time, having been the subject of a major restoration in 1990 (see bills and receipts on file). However, it was painted blue and had been re-trimmed in pale grey. As the vendor considered the original livery more desirable, he decided to return the car to its ex-factory specification of Silver Birch with Connolly Red leather interior, just like Corgi's James Bond car. As the DB5 was rust free and in excellent condition, the bare-metal re-spray was easily accomplished, there being no damage or corrosion to repair. The transformation was undertaken in 2008 by Alan Smith Motors (paintwork) and Lincoln Scott (interior) to correct factory specification as per the original build sheet (see photographic record on file). The engine bay was detailed at the same time.
In addition, '1677' boasts an engine rebuilt in 2008 to 4.2 litres and 'unleaded' specification by Martin Brewer's race engine specialist at Runnymede Motors. Adjustable power steering has been added, while other noteworthy features include a new stainless steel exhaust, new Avon tyres, Borrani wheel spinners and a Becker Mexico Retro navigation system in hidden console. Presented in generally excellent condition, this very fast and stunning looking DB5 is offered with the aforementioned bills, Swansea V5 document and a 5 thick file of restoration history and miscellaneous paperwork.
