Lot 211: 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT - FIA Papers
Nurburgring, Coys (11th August 2007)
1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTRegistration Number: EU registered Chassis Number: AR610494 Alfa Romeo, Italy's oldest sporting marque, has been building cars since 1910. It produced some of the greatest machinery ever to be seen pre-war, such as the beautiful 1750 Zagato roadsters, the magnificent Monzas and the mighty P3 racing cars. With the advent of the 1950s Alfa Romeo was forced to rationalise its production in order to survive financially. Nonetheless the firm still maintained a strong sporting tendency, and a model was always available to satisfy the whims of Alfa Romeo's affluent young customers; such a car was the 1600 GT, styled by Bertone. The new Giulia coupes included a 'normal' Sprint GT model as well as a more powerful Veloce version and a rare cabriolet, the GTC. Standard specification included all-round disc brakes and a powerful, 106bhp, four cylinder, dual overhead camshaft engine. Production lasted until a revised range appeared in 1968. Rolling off the production line in 1965 this car was delivered to the Gardia Finanza of Italy and is currently with its second owner from new. The vendor purchased the car in 1984 from the Italian Police and it was completely overhauled. For the first 10 years it has been driven only on dry days and stored in a garage. In 1995 the car was completely stripped and adapted to FIA historic race car specification with all appropriate modifications carried out, including a full roll cage, racing Dunlop brake pads, safety fuel tank, electric fuel pump, bucket seats, five point seat harnesses, fire extinguisher and perspex windows to reduce weight. The engine, breathing through twin Weber 45 DCOE carburettors with polished intake manifold, is producing in the region of 130bhp with power fed through a sinter clutch; other upgrades include a racing exhaust system with side pipe. This Sprint GT was then raced from 1996 to 2000 and it is supplied with FIA papers and its original road specification engine, and presented in very good condition. A very popular model and an accessible entry into quality historic race events. EstimateE13,000-E17,000
