Lot 201: 1983 Rolls-Royce Corniche Convertible
Légende et Passion, Coys (20th May 2006)
In 1971 just after Rolls Royce had been forced to call in the receiver over financial trouble associated with problems in jet engine production, the two door models then in production were given an independent identity of their own when the Rolls-Royce Corniche was announced. This bold action was well founded, because motor car production was solvent and profitable. The new Corniche differed in technical specification as well as in outward appearance from the basic models and was the work of Bill Allen from the Styling Department at the Crewe factory who had also been responsible for the timeless elegance of the H.J. Mulliner, Park Ward two door saloons based on the Silver Shadow's standard coachwork. The Corniche had 10% more power and greater torque; the sporting coachwork was greatly admired, and it was much sought after around the world, particularly in America. The interior was particularly luxurious, with fine leather upholstery and lovely walnut in evidence throughout. In production for many years, the Corniche was the mainstay of the Rolls Royce line up for almost two decades, especially the convertible which found favour with the rich and famous from all walks of life. This fine left hand drive example of a Corniche II convertible is beautifully finished in georgian silver with red leather interior and hood and was first registered in Switzerland on 01.07.1983. It was sold by Rolls Royce agents Schmohl in Zuerich a year later and imported to Germany by Auto Koenig of Munich in April of 1990. The fortunate second lady owner lived in Gruenwald, regarded as the posh area of Munich continued to keep the car in immaculate condition inside and out, and it is still only showing 115,000 kms. It is reported to still be in very fine order and drives exceptionally well; we are also informed that everything in the car works correctly. A fine example of an 80's style icon.
