Lot 267: 1991 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II

This Mercedes-Benz 190E is one of the strictly limited production run of just 502 Evolution II models produced by AMG, Mercedes-Benz’s official high performance division. Launched at the 1990 Geneva Salon, the left-hand drive-only Evolution II ‘homologation special’ was designed with the German Touring Car Championship in mind and featured a spectacular double rear wing. Developed by Professor Richard Eppler of Stuttgart University, the rear wings and front skirt were adjustable for racing, enabling the downforce to be tailored to specific circuits and greatly improving the roadholding. Remarkably, even though it had been created within such an uncompromising set of parameters, the ‘Evo II’ turned out to be a very civilised 250 km/h road car that testers found “far easier to drive very, very quickly than the production model, with remarkable grip and astonishing braking power.” Its 2.5-litre, 16-valve engine had been extensively re-worked, with rotating masses lightened, lubrication improved and cam timing altered to give blistering performance with 235 bhp.

This completely original example of one of the most exciting touring cars of recent years was sold new on 3rd March 1991 by the Mercedes Benz dealer Lodauto Spa in Italy before coming into the hands of its current (second) owner, a mature French private collector, in 2000. Finished in black with matching ‘as new’ leather interior, and equipped with all the options - sunroof, air conditioning, electric windows, etc - the vehicle has covered 85,000 kilometres from new and is presented in perfect condition. It is offered with stamped maintenance booklet and original owner’s handbook, and represents a rare opportunity to acquire an original and unmolested example of an iconic model that can only become increasingly collectible.

Il la cèda cette année-là au second et actuel propriétaire, un collectionneur privé français d’une soixantaine d’années. Dans sa livrée noire avec intérieur assorti en cuir ‘comme neuf’ et équipée de toutes les options d’époque – toit ouvrant, air conditionné, vitres électriques, système stéréo Blaupunkt avec chargeur CD, etc – cette Evolution II a parcouru 85’000 km depuis sa sortie d’usine et se présente dans un état absolument irréprochable. Elle sera livrée à son futur acquéreur avec son carnet d’entretien tamponné et sa pochette Mercedes d’origine comprenant le manuel de l’utilisateur, le manuel de fonctionnement de la radio et autres livrets d’époque ainsi que sa carte grise française et son contrôle technique à jour. Cette 190 Evolution II représente une rare opportunité d’acquérir un exemplaire original et en excellent état d’une icône de la marque qui devient indéniablement un vrai collector.
