Lot 202: Ford Series 11A V-8 Coupe
Exceptional Motorcars and related Memorabilia, Bonhams & Butterfields (14th August 2009)
Ford offered both six-cylinder and V-8 models for the first time ever in 1941. In both lines, the least expensive style was the single-seat, two-passenger Coupe. The Series 11A V-8 version of this utilitarian 'business coupe' listed for as little as $735 in Deluxe (standard) trim, reflecting a $15 premium for the eight-cylinder engine. For an additional $20, a pair of small auxiliary seats could be had behind the front seat. The Coupe's relatively long deck provided access to a truly large luggage compartmenttraveling salesmen, who favored such styles, sometimes slept in the trunk of their Fords!
This little black V-8 Coupe has had but four owners since 1941. Its odometer has recorded just 53,300 miles over the past 68 years. Sold new to Mabel and Edna Hughes, residents of the small northwestern Missouri town of Skidmore, the car was next owned in Virginia, and was later kept for a period in New York before the vendor, a California collector, acquired it in 2004.
Mabel and Edna were obviously no Thelma and Louisetheir Ford Coupe was seemingly lovingly maintained, and it has been well conserved by succeeding owners. Here is an alluring car for the collector who craves just as Henry built it originality.
DeLuxe trim level equipment found on the Coupe includes dual windshield wipers, sun visors and horns, in addition to a cigar lighter. Options include the wide whitewall tires, bright wheel trim rings and chrome horn ring.
The Ford's 'flathead' V-8 engine has recently undergone major maintenance, to include new pistons, rings, valves, heads and water pumps. The carburetor and radiator were also recently rebuilt and the brake system has been freshly reconditioned.
Offered with the original Ford owner's manual and tools, the Coupe is also accompanied by service records. Astute observers will note there are no front bumper guardsthey were a $3.50 option on 1941 Ford Deluxe models, so the car's appearance is correct.
The 1941 Ford Coupe is presented with a clear California title.
