Lot 521: 1910 Hupmobile Model 20 1.8 litre Two Seat Runabout
Collectors' Motor Cars and Automobilia, Bonhams (21st April 2008)
Following a distinguished career with Oldsmobile, Ford and Regal, Robert Craig Hupp established manufacture of motor cars bearing his name in 1909 in Detroit, Michigan. The first Hupmobile was a four cylinder 16.9hp Runabout with sliding gear transmission and this car, designated the Model 20, found 1,618 customers in the first year. It was priced at $750 and Emil Nelsons engineering skills produced a car that was sophisticated and reliable. This was proven between November 1910 and January 1912 when a Hupmobile touring car completed a round the world promotional tour of 48,600 miles crossing 26 different countries. Hupp left the company in 1911 following a disagreement with the board, but Hupmobile continued, the Model 32 of 1912 and onwards, an all steel bodied car, being the mainstay of pre-Great War production.
This car is presented in red livery with black wings and upholstery and is to right-hand drive specification. The car has been the subject of major restoration in the U.S.A. some years ago, including work to engine, chassis and coachwork. New aluminium pistons were fitted to the engine at that time. The car is equipped with brass oil side lamps and acetylene headlamps. The four cylinder engine, cast in pairs, will, when recommissioned following a period of inactivity, provide ample power for the lightweight coachwork and performance should indeed be remarkably sporting. The car will be eligible for appropriate events organised for members of the Veteran Car Club and Vintage Sports Car Club Light Car and Edwardian Section.
