Lot 245: 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider Veloce
Sports Car Auction, Coys (22nd July 2006)
The economic depression that followed World War II decreed that Alfa Romeo could no longer afford to produce purely the bespoke motor cars that had made the marque famous on both road and track. More mass produced models were required and in 1954 the company found its saviour in the Giulietta Sprint, a small and graceful two door coupé by Bertone.Under the Giulietta's skin the chassis employed independent front suspension with a coil-sprung live rear axle and drum brakes all round. The twin-cam four cylinder engine, like the suspension, owed much to Alfa's racing experience and produced 65bhp at 6,000rpm from just 1.3 litres - impressive for 1954. In 1956 high lift camshafts, dual twin choke Weber sidedraft carburettors increased power to 90bhp for the new Sprint Veloce version; the latter soon built on the competition success of the Sprint, winning its class on the Mille Miglia, Targa Florio and Tour de France the same year, plus outright victory on the Alpine Rally. These rare and desirable early Veloce models also benefited from alloy rather than steel for the bonnet, boot and doors, Perspex in place of glass side windows, and a fuel capacity increase from 14 to 21 gallons. The Giulietta Sprint Veloce was most certainly a superb and successful sports car in the great Alfa Romeo tradition, which went on to sire even more race-oriented models from this great manufacturer. This extremely pretty Alfa Romeo Veloce was sold in 1965 and is still in fine generally original condition, although recently a new interior has been installed along with light engine refurbishment and brake overall bringing the car back to use. Finished, as one would expect, in Rosso Red with black interior and hood.Ein wirklich schner Giulia Spyder in der klassischen Farbkombination Rot mit schwarzer Innenausstattung. Erst krzlich wurden Motor und Bremsen berholt.
