Lot 504: 1970 FIAT 500L Saloon
Goodwood Festival of Speed, Bonhams (11th July 2008)
An Automobile Club D’Italia ‘Certificato Cronologico’ with this 110F Berlina 500L confirms Fiat manufacture 6 May 1970 and first registration in Cuneo on 21 May of that year when the left-hand drive 2-door with small fabric sunroof would appear to have entered long-term Italian ownership. The DVLA Number Plate Authorisation Certificate records the issue in Nottingham of the current 'CAU 430H' UK registration 24 August 2004, since when the V5C indicates two further changes of ownership. There are also three recent MoTs on file, the current certificate issued at 39,890kms valid until October.
Mechanical refurbishment by the previous owner in 2007 included changing the engine to 126 specification, a popular upgrade for the 500.Whilst earlier this year, Model Tech of Bognor Regis found the bodywork to be sound and rust-free and requiring only minimal restoration prior to repainting. Indeed, when photographed, the orange paintwork and bright-work positively gleamed and the interior, to standard spec, presented really well. The 2-cylinder engine, which the vendor believes to be of 594cc capacity, started promptly from cold and, once warm, ran smoothly and quietly, and all the gears engaged correctly. This characterful and likely to be frugal Italian also qualifies for a free tax disc and will take up so little space in the paddock.
