For the debut of its new MGA in 1955, MG wisely chose that year's Le Mans 24 Hour race; after a succession of open-wheeled models there were fears of an adverse reaction to such a streamlined car, and it was felt that by showing the MGA in competition first the aerodynamic shape would be accepted as a performance essential. There had been some delays, however, in getting the go-ahead for production, MG owner BMC declining, having already agreed with Donald Healey to build the Austin Healey 100; it was the success of a highly streamlined MGA prototype, which took several records up to 153mph, which finally persuaded BMC to relent.
The competition successes of the ZA Magnette had already proven the potential of its new 1,498cc four cylinder engine and this was chosen for the new MGA. With 68bhp at 5,550rpm - soon raised to 72bhp - the MGA was capable of 0-60mph in 15 seconds and 97mph while the predictable handling, via independent coil spring front suspension and live leaf-sprung rear axle, was almost foolproof. The car was an instant success and in 1956 the roadster was joined by a fixed head coupé
An original left-hand drive roadster, this car was delivered to its first owner in America in 1959. HVS 434 was returned to England in 1993 and was purchased as a complete restoration project by the current owner in 1996. Using all original parts and panels, he set about stripping the car to bare metal with a specialist friend who worked for Alvis. The chassis was then treated to a product called kayfoss, which was applied not only to the chassis but also to all of the body tub and body panels. Kayfoss is usually used on the legs of oilrigs and bonds itself to metal substances. Photographs of the restoration are present in the car's history file.
After seven years there was nothing that was not replaced or restored on the car and finally it was completed in 2003. This MGA has never been driven in the rain and is described as a lovely car to drive. It comes complete with valid road fund tax, a current mot test certificate and has won many awards. Finally, even Sir Stirling Moss has been photographed in the driving seat. Any MGA admired by Sir Stirling is sure to bring years of enjoyment to a new owner.
