Lot 10: Mercedes-Benz 380SL

Classics, BCA (22nd July 2008)

Making its first appearance at the Geneva Auto Show in March 1980, the 380SL used the same chassis as the 6-cylinder models but now offered V8 power. Developing 218bhp at 5500rpm, the 380 SL boasted a maximum speed of 134mph and despite being no lightweight, was capable of accelerating from 0-60mph in 8.5 seconds and was to prove a worthy replacement for the outgoing 450 SL. With their timeless styling and high level of equipment, these models have earned a loyal and enthusiastic following which is certainly justified. In the hands of one owner since new, this example of the 380 SL dates from 1982 and is reported to have covered just 16,500 miles. Finished in beige with cloth interior trim, the car is reported as being in original condition with all mechanical components said to be in good order and commensurate with the low recorded mileage. We are assured that the car recorded mileage is due to the fact that the vehicle has seen only sparing summer use over the years. It is now offered for sale after 26 years' ownership, the reason being an imminent house move with no garaging
