Lot 324: 1964 Aston Martin DB5 Saloon
Aston Martin Motor Cars, Bonhams (17th May 2008)
Aston Martin’s post-war evolution took a giant step forward with the launch of the DB4 in 1958. Classically proportioned, the Touring-designed body established an instantly recognisable look that would stand the marque in good stead until 1970. The engine was still an all-alloy twin-overhead-camshaft ‘six’, but the old W O Bentley-designed 3.0-litre unit had been superseded by a new design by Tadek Marek. Proven in racing before it entered production in the DB4, the new 3,670cc engine developed 240bhp at 5,500rpm. This formed the template for the later DB5 engine that was enlarged to 3,995cc with power further improved to 282bhp. Production commenced with a four-speed plus overdrive transmission before a ZF five-speed unit became standard, such as this example.
Other improvements included alternator electrics, Girling disc brakes instead of Dunlops, Sundym glass, electric windows and an oil pressure gauge as standard equipment. The DB5 was also offered in convertible form while independent coachbuilder Harold Radford offered a shooting brake conversion. Just 1,021 DB5s were manufactured over three years between July 1963 and September 1965.
First registered on the 2 May 1964, ‘DB5/1583/R’ was sold new to a Mr A H Ripley via HWM Motors of Walton on Thames. Mr Ripley obviously cherished the DB5 as it was not until 1987 that he decided to sell it on – and we believe he sold it to a Mr Blaze who resided in Switzerland. Whilst in Switzerland, the DB5 underwent major refurbishment by E Hahn of Kreins. When the present owner acquired the car in 2001, he entrusted it to Aston Workshop for further enhancements. Between 2001-2003 the car was converted to negative earth, electronic ignition was fitted, as were seat belts, Monte Carlo handling kit, power steering, air conditioning and hi-fi (discretely hidden), Le Mans brake booster kit, up-rated radiator. Work also included balanced flywheel and clutch, full chassis service, unleaded fuel conversion, gearbox overhaul and new alarm. In 2006 the car enjoyed a complete re-trim by D J Smail, new alternator, carburetor overhaul and five new tyres.
The car is resplendent in Cumberland Grey with beige leather interior. Offered with bills for work carried out, V5 registration document, old style log book, current MoT and road fund license. An attractive and iconic Aston Martin ready for the season ahead.
