Lot 435: 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu Two-Door Hardtop
Collectors' Motorcars and Automobilia, Bonhams & Butterfields (15th August 2007)
Chevrolet’s product line offering exploded in the first half of the Sixties. Starting with the Corvair in 1960, then the Chevy II in 1962, Chevrolet became a full line manufacturer all on its own when it introduced the Chevelle in 1964. Slotted in between the full size Chevy and the compact Chevy II, it shared the sharp-edged corporate look. With eleven different models, from the painfully plain Chevelle 300 to the glamorous Malibu SS, the Chevelle was a complete marque all to itself.
In just that first year 338,286 Chevelles left assembly plants in Baltimore, Kansas City and Fremont, California. Saying it was a success is a masterpiece of understatement and its success contributed to Chevrolet redesigning it only two years after it was introduced. The 1966 Chevelles were distinctly different from their predecessors and some of the most attractive automobiles ever to come out of Chevrolet. Little change was necessary, or desirable, for 1967 and were limited to reprofiling the fender edges and an anodized aluminum grille. A hugely popular model, Chevy shipped some 341,000 Chevelles in 1967, 290,000 of them Malibu passenger cars.
The example offered here in Granada Gold with Black vinyl roof and matching Black vinyl interior is the basic Malibu hardtop. Powered by the base 283 cubic inch V8 (the last year that pioneering version of the Chevy small block would be built) rated at 195 horsepower, it has a Powerglide automatic transmission, bench seat, power steering, radio and a set of Corvette Rally wheels with BFG Radial T/A white letter tires. It appears to be, with the exception of a presentable clear coat repaint, entirely original. The chassis is clean, with some minor surface rust and it appears that the engine has never been out. The odometer shows 52,461 miles which could well be the actual miles from new, judging from the car’s appearance and the absence of major wear or age.
Its condition, equipment (other than the wheels) and colors match the notations on its Trim Tag. During cataloging no documentation for this Malibu was found, but it appears to be a sound, honest, mostly original example in good, drivable condition.
Without reserve
