Lot 433: 1959 MG A 1600 Fixedhead Coupe
True Greats, Coys (1st December 2005)
The competition successes of the MG Magnette ZA had already proven the potential of its new 1,489cc four cylinder engine and this was chosen for the new MG 'A'. In modified form it powered those works cars at Le Mans where they were beaten in their class only by three Porsches and an Osca. When the MG 'A' was launched little changed bar a steel rather than aluminium body, and much was made by the press of its competition pedigree. With 68bhp at 5,500rpm soon raised to 72bhp the MG 'A' was capable of 0-60mph in 15 seconds and 97mph while the predictable handling, via independent coil spring front suspension and a live rear axle with leaf springs, was almost foolproof. In July 1959 the MG 'A' became the MG 'A' 1600 with 1,588cc engine and standard Lockheed front disc brakes; power was now 80bhp and improved torque gave improved performance 0-60mph in 14.2 seconds and 100mph and the car we are proud to offer here must be one of the nicest examples currently on the market. This charming example is finished in Old English White with contrasting Red hide interior and fitted with wire wheels. This car has had an interesting history and has been the subject of a ground up restoration costing approximately 20,000 and is probably the finest example on the market today. There can be few nicer examples of this eternally popular British Sportscar, a magnificent representative of a famous sporting marque.
