Lot 231: 1970 Plymouth Duster

Featuring curvy exterior styling and a rounded fastback look for the rear, the Plymouth Duster shared the same front end styling as the Valiant and the same interior. The Duster was available with a variety of engines, ranging from two slant six cylinder engines to a choice of either a 318 cubic inch V8 or a high performance 340 cubic inch V8 rated at 275bhp. It was this last V8, coupled with the Duster's extremely low price, which made it a hit. The price for the base model was a mere $2,172 (only a little more than the 1960 Valiant), the specification including a slant six 198 cubic inch engine, a column-mounted three speed manual transmission, and brakes and steering without power assistance. However, any performance buyer would go straight for the 340 V8 option. For a mere $400, this option comprised the high performance 340 V8 with four barrel carburettor, dual exhaust system, floor mounted three-speed manual transmission, a 3.23:1 rear axle, heavy duty suspension with larger diameter torsion bars, rear springs with extra leaves, front stabilizer bar, front disc brakes, and a unique instrument panel that included a tachometer and 150mph speedometer. Manufactured in 1970, this particular Duster is described as being in extremely good condition and features unique custom flame paintwork over the bonnet and flanks of the car. Under the bonnet one will find the engine bay is immaculate, housing an engine bored out to 383 cubic inches and with Mopar performance parts. The interior is finished in black with white inserts and has a floor mounted gear shift. Supplied with a Californian Certificate of Title, the car comes with a V5 document and a MoT certificate valid until April 2008.
