Lot 573: 1972 Jaguar E-Type Series III V12 Roadster
Goodwood Festival of Speed, Bonhams (11th July 2008)
The vendor purchased this V12-engined E-Type Roadster from Mr Murray Dawson, of Accrington, who had bought it from its long-term owner, a Mr Leyland, who owned the car from 1975 through to 1999 (see letter on file). Contacted by the current owner, Mr Leyland confirmed that the low mileage - 21,000 miles at time of sale to Mr Dawson - was genuine. He also stated the hood had never been up, that he had only used the car on warm sunny days, mostly to and from his tennis club, and that it was always garaged. Mr Leyland kept no service or repair receipts, but a letter from the garage that maintained the E-Type during his ownership is on file, confirming service/maintenance on an annual basis.
The vendor reports that mechanically the car was, and still is, in excellent working order. The bodywork too was in good, sound and generally rust-free condition, merely requiring attention in the few areas where corrosion was evident. For peace of mind, both lower door outer skins and both rear wheelarches were replaced, even though in each case only one showed any signs of deterioration, and all other affected areas attended to. The car was then professionally re-sprayed in its original colour, new door, window and windscreen rubbers being fitted at the same time. New complete rear light clusters and two new headlamp bowls were fitted also, together with new stainless-steel trim surrounding the rear numberplate. Once the car had been re-sprayed it was wax injected in the chassis box sections, door bottoms and all other inaccessible places, and on a very hot day wax occasionally drips from the underside, confirming that it is still doing its job.
During the vendors ownership the E-Type has been kept in a heated garage, maintained to a high standard and serviced annually regardless of mileage. New parts fitted include Koni shock absorbers (front); a complete hose set; exhaust and mountings; brake master cylinders (x2); clutch master cylinder; carburettor diaphragms (x4) and sensors for the electric fans, while the brake calipers; heater box and matrix; radiator and alternator have been rebuilt.
Like the previous two owners, the vendor has covered relatively few miles in the E-Type, which is one of several classics that he owns, and feels that the time is now ripe to rationalise his collection and pass it on a fortunate new owner. Finished in red with black leather interior, the car has the desirable four-speed manual transmission and is offered with sundry invoices, current road fund licence/MoT and Swansea V5.
