Lot 184: c.1952 Steyr Junior 18cc (Lohmann) Cyclemotor
Professor Fritz Ehn Motorcycle Museum Collection, Bonhams (30th June 2008)
One of the most technically interesting machines from the Ehn museum is this diminutive cyclemotor engine, mounted on what is described as a pre-war, Austrian army Steyr ‘waffenrad’ bicycle. Museum-catalogued as a Steyr ‘Junior’, this is a re-titled German Lohmann diesel engine. The Lohmann has more of a resemblance to a high-speed model aircraft engine than to a cyclemotor, both in its diminutive 18 cc capacity and compression-ignition operation. With no ignition system the throttle operates a contra-piston varying the compression and, thus, the power, up to 0.8 bhp at 5000 rpm using ‘green’ fuel. A fund of knowledge is available at club level enabling the new owner to ‘make it go’ joining the very select band of Lohmann owners.
