Lot 778: 1935 MG PA Tourer
Collectors' Motor Cars, Cycles & Automobilia, Bonhams (30th April 2007)
‘This latest model is a marked improvement in all respects over its forbears,’ reported The Autocar magazine after road-testing the new P-Type Midget in November 1934. A replacement for the successful J2 Midget, the PA followed the general lines of its predecessor but was equipped with a more robust version of MG’s 847cc, four-cylinder, overhead-camshaft engine benefiting from a cross-flow cylinder head, stronger, three-bearing crankshaft and better lubrication. Chassis alterations, many resulting from competition experience, included a longer wheelbase, strengthened transmission and 12”-diameter (up from 8”) brakes. Top speed was in the region of 75mph. Built in two- and four-seater variants, the PA in the latter form was the last Midget to offer sportscar motoring for the family. Some 2,000 PAs were produced between 1934 and 1935 when the model was superseded by the relatively short-lived PB. The classical lines of the traditional MG sportscar continued on the successor ‘T’ series and today these wonderful little cars, whose lines and driving characteristics are so redolent of pre-war days, remain highly sought after by enthusiasts.
This PA is reported as in good useable condition having recently been fitted with a new differential and new cylinder head gasket. It has been used regularly during the past few years while forming part of the Exmoor Classic Car Collection, covering only a limited mileage but always performing well. Restored, it is believed in the 1970s, it remains very original and comes compete with full weather equipment and tonneau cover. Also included in the sale is a substantial file of history and the car is offered with old-style buff logbook, current road fund licence, MoT to March 2008 and Swansea V5C registration document. In short: this is an attractive car ready for immediate enjoyment.
