Lot 64: Volkswagen Type 2 Camper Van
Fine Collectors' Cars, H&H Sales Limited (22nd July 2009)
The T2 version of the Type 2 Volkswagen van was launched in 1968 to replace the shorter `Split-window' T1 version. Visual changes to the T2 included the large, single-piece windscreen giving the `bay-window' nickname. While under its skin the newcomer benefited from the adoption of a half-shaft driveline to the rear which not only accommodated an increase in ride height but also improved handling. Larger engines were fitted, and a longer wheelbase was introduced. The vans became popular with motor caravan builders, as it was easier to meet the needs of each conversion in the bigger `bus. T2a derivatives were the original incarnation, and had curvaceous bumpers wrapping close to the body, the front one incorporating the cab-step. Later T2b versions moved to stand-off bumpers without this endearing feature, so it is fortunate that this '72 Devon camper is the more-stylish T2a version. Its provenance is confirmed from the one owner, who bought it new, and had it `Endrust' treated immediately.
It has always been garaged, and serviced by VW main agents and specialists. Twice in its life it has been cosmetically refreshed, in 1982 and 1999, though there is a small patch of rust visible at present, this isn't a camper which has been welded and re-restored many times over. The interior is finished in grey vinyl, black rubber and orange plaid cloth, so feels very 1970s, and the design of elevating roof fitted to this `bus was current from 1968 until about '75. It consists of a GRP plinth attached to the roof of the `van and a shallow elevating roof attached by spring loaded triangular side supports which when extended hold the roof up. Weather is kept out by a concertina bellows made from plastic/vinyl material. The mileage is verified by the vendor at 89000, and both engine and gearbox are described as being in "good" condition. The van benefits from placement into the historic vehicle taxation category, and is MoT'd until 26 September 2009. A freestanding factory-made awning is available by separate negotiation - useful for keeping your pitch when staying on busy campsites.
