Lot 22: Jowett JAVELIN

The Bradford based company of Jowett embarked upon motor car manufacture in 1906 and rapidly built up a reputation for well- engineered, robust cars which were particularly notable for their hill climbing ability and rugged qualities.� However, the best remembered nowadays are almost certainly the stylish Javelin Saloon and its sporting counterpart, the Jupiter.� The Javelin Saloon was introduced in 1946 and is regarded today as a true milestone in original car design.� Certainly, its performance stands comparison with many 1�-litre cars thirty years its junior and indeed the Javelin was the best performing 1�-litre saloon of its day.� The horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine gave a top speed in excess of 80mph, allied to extremely good fuel consumption, with around 30-32mpg being the norm.�The Javelin also achieved a number of competition successes, including a class win in the 1949 Monte Carlo Rally whilst another example won the 2-litre Touring Car Class at the Spa 24-Hour Race in the same year.� The 1953 International Tulip Rally saw an outright win for a privately entered Javelin.�This particular example is of 1948 manufacture and is finished in white with dark blue interior trim.� The subject of much refurbishment in recent times which has included the fitment of a rebuilt engine, the motor car is offered for sale with a manual, spare parts book and MOT certificate valid until July 2008.� A V5 registration document is also provided.�A pleasing example of this quality British sporting saloon that is now a comparative rarity.
