Lot 104: Mercedes-Benz 380SL
Classic, Collectors & Sports Cars, Barons (27th October 2009)
When the 107SL was introduced in 1971, it had to uphold the reputation of the very successful "Pagoda" model, which had been in production since 1963 and had proved to be extremely popular.
The 107 continued the same basic design but was a little bigger and somewhat heavier than the "Pagoda". The disappearing hood mechanism and removable hard-top remained and the engine options now included the 3.5 litre V8, which powered the new saloon range.
The 107SL was a hugely successful model, which remained in production for 17 years, largely unchanged. Engine options expanded to include a 2.8 straight six and V8's, which expanded to 5.6 litre by the end of the production run in 1989.
Offered here is an example of the relatively rare 380 version of the SL, which was introduced, with the new 116, 3839ccm all alloy V8, in 1981, replacing the 350.
The car was awarded to the vendor as a retirement gift from his company in 2005. Since then it has benefited from a new timing chain in September 2005, rebuilt automatic gearbox in 2006, new brakes and calipers in 2007, throttle linkage replaced in 2005, plus general maintenance as required. The indicated 77000 miles is believed to be correct but is not warranted as such.
Finished in pearl blue with navy blue leather and hood, the car is described as having an excellent engine and as being in generally good order otherwise. It is also to be offered with a new MoT and 6 months road tax. The vendor also states that the car has an agreed value insurance for £12000 via Adrian Flux Classic Car Insurance.
