Lot 647: Jaguar E-Type Series 1 4.2 Fixedhead Coupe
Probably the most readily recognizable of all collector sports cars and certainly the most likely to be heading any serious addict's wish list is the Jaguar E Type. The XK120, 140 and 150 line was always going to be a difficult act to follow, but the E Type rapidly outsold them all. Borrowing much from the race proven technology of the legendary D Type, the first production E Type with 265bhp 3.8 litre engine from the XK150, which it directly replaced, was announced in March 1961. Thanks to low drag bodywork and lighter monocoque construction the performance of both open roadster and hard top coupe E type, initially with headlamps fared in behind wind cheating cowls, was extraordinary for the early 1960's. For in those happy and speed camera-free days, an early E Type driver could enjoy 150mph performance for less than �2,100, being able to out perform virtually all of the more pricey competition.
Improvements for the 4.2 Litre model included, beside the obvious enlargement of the engine, an improved synchromesh gearbox and larger brakes.
This particular E-Type is one of the finest we have offered for sale. A desirable fixedhead model with a five-speed gearbox, it has been maintained to the highest possible standards and formed part of a significant UK collection for many years. Possibly the ultimate specification of this classic sportscar, the 4.2 Series 1 combined the enhanced performance of the larger 4.2 litre engine with the pure, original design of the Series 1, making it the perfect combination of power and beauty.
This is an excellent touring car and is in beautiful running order. A truly superb example of one of the most beloved and beautiful sportscars ever made, this is British engineering at its finest.
