Lot 204: 1977 Triumph TR7 V8
Légende et Passion, Coys (20th May 2006)
The TR7, mainly in the form of what was coyly referred to as the 'TR7 V8', had considerable success as a works rally car. The first win was by Tony Pond and Mike Nicholson in the 1976 Raylor Rally, followed by another 11 outright wins, 8 second places and 8 third places on national and international events over four years. On offer today is an ex-works TR7 V8 as driven by Tony Pond as a race car on the Ypres and Manx rallies. OOM 515 was built at Abingdon MG works and was one of only four cars built in 1977, all of which had OOM numbers. Supplied with the car is a copy of a letter from the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust confirming this car was designated as 'RAC Rally'. OOM 515 is in very good order, and as you would expect being an ex-works car, is fully kitted out. The car features a narrow track shell fitted with a multi point cage and Willans harnesses. Suspension is by Bilstein and adjustable all round with vented discs at all corners with 4-pot calipers, balanced bar and hydraulic handbrake. Drive is fed via a works close ratio 5 speed box through a limited slip diff'. The Rover 3.5 litre V8 feeds through four Webber carbs producing 300 bhp. The motor has benefited from a recent rebuild. The car is supplied with a V5 certificate, bills and details of competitions entered in the mid 1980's including a class B win at Mallory Park and a 3rd at the TR Register Race Championship. Finished in works colours this car looks striking on Minilite wheels, is on the button and ready to be campaigned in historic events.
