Lot 1024: 1929 Rolls-Royce 40/50hp Phantom I Chassis

Collectors' Motor Cars, Bonhams (24th September 2006)

1929 Rolls-Royce 40/50hp Phantom I Chassis
This English-built long type chassis was ordered new in 1929 by Rootes Ltd. of Piccadilly, London, for their customer H. Kendall & Sons of Lima, Peru. Originally coachwork was to be a double cabriolet by Thrupp & Maberly, however factory records suggest that in 1930 a six-seater enclosed drive limousine body was fitted by Victor Broom Ltd. The car subsequently changed hands in 1931 and 1962, remaining in England, and in 1966 was the property of an English collector, James France of Dewsbury, Yorkshire. It is not known when it crossed the Atlantic but the chassis was acquired from Long Island many years ago, probably from Sam Adelman’s junk yard. It is complete with wheels and axles, pedals and cross shaft, a bare crank case, gearbox, firewall, petrol tank and part complete steering box. The chassis has been standing out for many years and is offered strictly as viewed. Copies of the original Factory Order and Build Sheets are offered with the chassis. 83OR is considered suitable spares or as the basis for a major restoration project.
