Lot 26: Austin SEVEN GORDON ENGLAND CUP MODEL

Following its introduction in 1922, it was just two years later that the first sports model of the Austin Seven was launched. Costing �175, this was an attractive little machine with a distinctive pointed tail and came with a guaranteed top speed of 50mph. This new model had instantaneous appeal and was to fare well in the emerging new market for small sporting cars. As the competition prowess of the Seven came to the fore, numerous other sporting types were to become available, bodied by a variety of different coachbuilders. Arguably one of the most appealing of these with its well-balanced lines was the 'Cup Model' by Gordon England of Putney, London. Reputedly named after the Rudge Wickworth biennial cup race at Le Mans in which Gordon England had himself competed, this little car utilised a body of three-ply panelling on a box beam round the base of the shell to give increased rigidity. Although designed by Gordon England, the earliest examples were in fact produced by Weymann, although as the Gordon England coachwork became more established construction was to take place at their own works. Fabric covered, the Cup Model was originally available in Royal Blue, Scarlet, Silver and Black or Orange and Green, and eventually the range was to include Dark Blue, Maroon, Orange, Brown and Green. Offered between August 1925 and March 1929, the Cup Model initially cost �185, although by September 1928 this had dropped to �140. The Standard engine was the usual fitment; however, a 'Brooklands' engine in a higher state of tune could be specified if required.Dating from 1927, this example is reported to have been restored between 2003 and 2004 and has been unused since due to the owner passing away before the car was completed. The vehicle was subsequently sold on behalf of the widow and work finalised by the new owner and it is reported as being in good mechanical order all round. Finished in brown and black with the cockpit trimmed in beige leather, the car has a tonneau cover and a new hood; however, a replacement hood frame will be required. The car retains its original Gloucestershire registration number and following four years of ownership is now being offered for sale as the vendor is reducing his collection.
